Aim

To determine which of the 5 germination methods would increase the germination rate of radish seeds the most.

Hypothesis

Radish seeds that are pre-treated by being soaked in water will germinate at a faster rate than the other forms of pre-treated seeds.

Equipment

• 5 pots
• 5 ziplock bags
• water
• radish seeds
• soil
• fertilized soil
• measuring jug

Method

1. Gather all equipment
2. Pretreat all seeds for 24 hours
3. Plant the seeds
4. Record number of sprouts over a 8 day period
5. Repeat experiment

why i chose this srp and benefits

I chose this topic as my SRP as i show interest in growing plants. I find it interesting to be able to grow what you eat. I also find it interesting for science to be able to alter the way things and improve things for our benefit. Increasing the germination rate of radish seeds is altering the natural process of growing radish seeds.

Germination is beneficial because

• we are able to avoid extinction of a species of plant as we able to grow and breed them faster
• we are able to benefit from the fast growing plants economically
• we are able to prevent starvation as we are growing the plants quickly

At this stage i have not finalized what i would like to do for my SRP. Throughout the week i thought about possible projects which include:

• tests to do with acidic drinks like coke
• do food additives influence the behavior of young children
• see how many colours of food dye or ink is found in a smartie or an m&m
• drop mentos in soft drinks and see results
• whether temperature of food affects tastes

• which gender has faster reactions
• the effect of video games on pulse rate and blood pressure

• Ways that will increase the germination rate of radish seeds
